Preliminary essentials

The nervous system:

controls and organizes the body’s survival commands through a central nervous system ( the brain and spinal cord).

connects the central nervous system to the organs through the neurovegetative system (neuro-organic).

connects the central nervous system to the elements allowing movements and body sensitivity through the somatic nervous system.

The vertebral apparatus:

protects the central nervous system and allows nerve branches through freely.

is made up of mobile segmented elements (vertebrae, cranial or pelvic bones) the position or mobility of which may be disturbed.

A free nervous system = good health.

Chiropractic

chiro image 1Is the health profession devoted to the care and repair of the vertebral apparatus function in its relation to the nervous system through handwork on vertebro-cranio-pelvic disturbances and blocks.

Chiropractic neuro-vertebral action thus consists of the adjustment of vertebral subluxations.

The vertebral subluxation

The vertebral subluxation is a functional disturbance in a joint which provokes disturbances in nerve impulse transmission, the cause of variations in the nervous tissues functioning and of various health problems.

The chiropractor's means of action

The chiropractor carries out the necessary examinations (physical, orthopedic, neurological, radiological...) before engaging the chiropractic analysis, which will allow him(her) to detect the subluxations in need of correction, having made sure that no contraindication exists against his(her) treatment, carried out according to the specific technique adapted to the diagnosis.

Vertebral subluxations are corrected with the help of adjustments: controlled manual stimulations on an osteo-articular segment, which provokes the normalization of the disturbed articular elements.

The nervous system is thus freed and may yet again play its role as the regulator of body functions, and so of health.

The specific corrective act is worked on daily over six years of studies - this is the price to pay for the brilliance ad exercise of the art - and has its effect inside the normal articular physiological range and is respectful of anatomical integrity. It can be prepared or completed through the use of reflex techniques, which modify muscular tone and ligament tension. Today’s living conditions mean that sometimes, in addition to or in preparation for adjustment, it is necessary to eliminate mechanical hygiene faults and traumatisms (physical, chemical or emotional), problems which we systematically look out for, such as:

bad sleeping or work positions.

bad neural organization, when the central nervous system’s commands are not well balanced.

chronic toxic disturbances due to substance abuse or physical or emotional stress, that work on the neuro-vegetative system can help “clean”.

disturbances created by faults in the functioning or the structure of the mouth (dental work) etc.

Indeed, the compensation parameters mentioned above can prevent proper vertebral subluxations correction, and can even make them chronic.

Chiropractic adjustment requires neither strength nor brutality nor pain, and the articular noises (sometimes present in the delivery of certain techniques) are not traumatisms, but rather signs of the good health of the joints concerned. In fact, scientific research has now demonstrated the clinical utility of the mechanisms associated with these articular sounds when correctly applied, which is the case for all treatment carried out by qualified chiropractors.

The different chiropractic techniques vary widely amongst the 100 000 + chiropractors in practice around the world, and appear to be greatly appreciated by many prestigious professional such as Tiger Woods and Arnold Schwarzenegger, to mention but a few... as well as the managers of leading football, basketball and Olympic teams.

Chiropractic Training: 6 years

A chiropractor is the professional specialized in vertebral adjustments. Training is 6000 hours of class over 5 years, full-time, and 1 year of clinical training.

The studies consist of the following:

a - fundamental sciences:anatomy, dissection, biochemistry, the history of health professions, histology, microbiology, nutrition, pathology, physiology etc.

b - clinical sciences: neurology :orthopedics, clinical and lab diagnostics, radiology, psychology etc.

c-chiropractic sciences: chiropractic philosophy and principles, palpation, spine analysis, biomechanics, traditional chiropractic techniques, different specialties etc..

d - clinical training.

e - final clinical exam before an international professional jury.

f -doctorate thesis with public viva.

Thus the chiropractor qualified “Doctor of Chiropractic” is competent in prescribing treatment in countries where the practice is recognized, for example: The United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, Denmark, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, The UK, Mexico, Japan etc.

Common therapeutic indications

According to their knowledge of the profession (on recommendation by another health professional, family habits, stays in countries where the profession is recognized, friends’ recommendations etc.) patients come for a consultation for various reasons: to treat a painful or organic symptom (chronic hormonal or organic problem), for general well-being (a few consultations can improve the body’s vitality), to remedy a learning or behavioral problem, scoliosis, treatment and adjustment for the sportsman/woman, etc. Indeed, the aim of Chiropractic is not only to eliminate pain, but also to help the body better play this role by itself by repairing its natural health tools.
Some common examples:

1) Pains of vertebral or articular origin:

a - Vertebral pains at all levels:Vertebral pains at all levels: stiff neck, cervical, dorsal or lumbar pain, neck and back stiffness.

b - Pain or symptoms manifesting around the head and face:certain headaches, migraines, eye pain, dizziness, facial neuralgia.

c - Upper member pain (shoulders, elbows, forearms):cervico-brachial neuralgia, scapulo-humeral periarthritis, sensitivity loss, ‘tennis elbow’, carpal canal syndrome etc.

d - Ribcage, abdominal or pelvic pain:intercostal or pseudo-visceral neuralgia (which imitate organ pain).

e - Lower member pain (hips, knees, ankles, feet) :sciatica, cruralgia, sprains...

2) Visceral symptoms:
Accompanied or not by associated vertebral pain (often as a consequence of bad nerve supply of the organs directly affected by the vertebral subluxation): constipation, asthma, gynecological problems, digestive problems or stomach aches...

3) A number of general disturbances:

Dyslexia (and its declinations: dys-graphy etc.) learning and behavioral difficulties (child hyperactivity or indolence), idiopathic or non-progressive scoliosis (all children should be checked before puberty in order to avoid later scoliosis which is so difficult to keep in check), confidence and coordination difficulties or repetitive injuries in sportsmen/women (check-ups should be done at the start and finish of seasons as well as after shocks and injuries), certain types of nervous depression, chronic or recurring health problems...

Duration of treatment

This depends on several factors: how long the problems have existed, their gravity, the patient’s age and general state of health, their lifestyle (their sleeping position...) etc.

In other words, the patient’s respect for general and vertebral hygiene, the reasons for the problems (accidents, shocks, bad work habits, stress, progressive or rapid installation, past treatments...) are essential parameters for maintaining their health.

Initial treatment can last several consultations, the number and frequency of which depend on the different factors contributing to the appearance, evolution and gravity of the problem, and the type of technique used. These consultations become less frequent as the patient makes progress and the articular, vertebral and neural apparatus come back into balance and harmony.

This first part of correction is essential because on its correct finish will depend the quality of eventual future treatments and the possibility of treating new problems rapidly. Next, the chiropractor may, with continued visits, the need of which vary amongst individuals, ensure the maintenance of the vertebral apparatus and the nervous system.

These steps, both preventive and remedial, is, in the long term, rational, balancing and economizing for the maintenance of good health and well-being, as vouched for by the number of countries which have chosen to regulate this professional activity thanks to the savings it can allow for.

Chiropractic technics

Chiropractic was created in 1895 in the United States by Daniel David Palmer, and today is the third primary health care provider profession in the industrial (following MDs and DDSs).

chiro image 1Each professional certified “Doctor of Chiropractic” (rest assured that they are all genuine – an old certificate is often better than good words) has been through the same basic training, with 6 years of studies during which all the traditional specific vertebral adjustment techniques are taught.

They may also practice other specialties in subluxation analysis and correction, techniques that may not figure in the core curriculum. These specialties may touch different spheres of chiropractic: neurological, energetic, cranial or visceral, pediatric, animal, sportsmen/women...

They are described along with the rest of the information about the profession in the work cited below.

Whatever the specialty techniques may be, your chiropractor will know how to chose that most appropriate for you. Chiropractic is not a random technique. It is a health profession.

Aim:

Less subluxations for better health.

And this commitment counts for all ages!
